RE: Looking to buy fixer upper with a slide

my advice I"ve given to others who've suggested this is twofold:
Do you want a hobby project? If yes, buy an old Camaro and mustang and do that up nice. Buy a nice used MH for a little more but you'll save 1000's over all.
If you just wnat a inexpensive MH to family in - go buy a nice genlty used unit and have fun.
If you want to spend $50 thousand on a $30 thousand rig - do a bus conversion. ;)

RE: Parking ordinance violation

instead of getting all your neighbors up in arms, call the guy who wrote the ticket and ask who the person who complained. Bet it was somebody close. Then find out from them why they complained. Maybe there is a simple easy way for you to keep the MH on the driveway and they won't complain again. or maybe your neighbor hates the idea of you having one then you're toast provided the law is set up right and evenly enforced. Then you have to get on whatever body that makes the law and get it changed ;)

RE: Trade in horror story

Tom I'd have offered to take that cheque and deliver it myself ;) can you go back and do that?
then you'd know whether it A) got done, and B) if you stop by the issuing bank could certify it and be sure it was solid.

RE: Looking for some advice please

IMHO a used coach has more to do with the owner's upkeep and use pattern than the original manufacturer. IE a beaten Tiffen is far worse then a well loved Fleetwood. How long has this sat? Can you see maintenance records? I've also read a lot here about mid to low range fleetwoods having lots of issues (Dealer and Fleetwood) but the higher end ones seems to be better built..

RE: Eagle in the wild

you want eagles? come out here in November-January. I was camping at a close ish campground where 100's were fishing in the river as the salmon came upstream. Quite a sight, including watching my neighbour get pelted with a salmon who escaped the talons of an overhead eagle. I assure you I found it hilarious, the eagle and neighbour had different opinions ;)

RE: Dry camping question.

just figure out what the amperage on the circuit in question is. IE a 15 amp circuit is pretty common in my MH. charge batteries with that, but no microwave or AC.

RE: Where the Industry is Headed

interesting - 6" lower, and narrower, meaning less wind drag. I'd still rather see a 20K GVWR so the manufacturers can't overload it - a 31' could hit 16K without CCC fairly easily. IE the 29R from Winnie is about 16K but on a 20K chassis.

RE: Lesson Learned

if i'm in an area where I might be worried about my portable growing "legs" I simply use the 25' extension cord and plug the portable one in between the attached and the extension, leaving it inside and locked and safe.

RE: Site problems?

this site has several ways "in" - trailerlife, motorhome, woodalls, rv.net - sometimes the individaul web landing pages are overwhelmed but today and yesterday the back end forum engine (the stuff that controls the actual content) appears to be having issues. I can sympathize with the forum sysadmins - how do you adequately plan for growth while fighting for budget etc etc.
I sure do get more than my money's worth here ;)

RE: FRED VS Pusher Comparison?

btw you may still seriously want to look at the 35J plan from Itasca or Winnie (different paint and interior fabrics- the rest is the same). Your uses seem similar to ours. Gas is much cheaper to buy and I have tons of power to go up big mountains and tow the Jeep. The only reason I"d go diesel is to get air suspension and other DP like features. I wouldn't spend money on a FRED just to get diesel. Not knocking diesel at all, just making sure you have all your options given.

RE: Towing a wrangler with ARB winch bumper

I don't have a winch but do have a custom mount that is under the stock bumper and could accommodate a winch (removable for 4x4 time too). added about ~$120 to my costs.

RE: FRED VS Pusher Comparison?

new = happy wife = nuff said ;)
Actually finding any bunk unit (gas or diesel) used would be tough.
beware of storage and capacities. I know nothing of the coaches you are looking at but if on day one you are looking for more storage that is a red flag to me. Our entire LR slide bins are empty save for one portable table and an inflatable dolphin beach toy. I can't imagine not having free space on day one.

RE: Help with extended warranty decision

Take that $4K and invest it into a gov't bond or something. You'll get a better return even if you have to pay a repair ;)
They are not doing this to help you, they are doing it to make money. The contract is written by their lawyers to their benefit.
Needless to say I passed on the "great offer" that my dealer wanted to "help" me with.

RE: RVing is cheaper than car & motel, cost calculation

EXCEPT for the initial cost outlay for the coach OR its monthly payments. Makes a tad difference
Of course, but I think we are "assuming" that one is going to have the RV anyhow, might as well use it.
bumpy
Absolutely but if you own (or use it at the bank's pleasure like most of us) you might as well use it. regardless of $$. I don't think anyone would say it is more fun to travel via car, so why not just go and enjoy?
Between depreciation and storage, just to park it, not insure or use, it costs me more than I pay for vacations to places like Hawaii and other exotic locales. I happen to be able to do both so I choose to.
